A School Business Professional performs a role that is unique to schools, administering and managing the financial, site and support services within the school context. They provide essential support to school leadership teams, implementing their financial and business decisions
Existing school staff members can choose to upskill and gain a Level 4 School Business Professional qualification to enable them to perform the role. It can also be used as a stepping stone for those aspiring to a senior or a strategic role within a school.
Lauren Baker, 41, had previously completed a Level 3 School Administration Foundation Certificate and was keen to take her learning further. She felt an apprenticeship training programme would be worthwhile as she could train whilst working at Henry Green Primary School.
The chance to gain extensive knowledge and experience without any fees was eye-opening for her, and she’s grateful for choosing an apprenticeship.
In her own words here is Lauren’s learner journey;
‘I decided to upskill myself and continue my learning, so I started a School Business Professional apprenticeship whilst working at Henry Green Primary School.
The key benefits of choosing the apprenticeship route included learning whilst earning, gaining a nationally recognised qualification, developing my skills and being given the time out of my working week to do off-the-job training.
What I love most about my role is being able to develop professionally without having to pay for it personally. I have previously completed courses where I have had to pay fees which proves costly. I enjoy working with all the stakeholders in my role and this current apprenticeship has helped me to further my knowledge and deepen my learning which has made me more mindful and confident.
My LMP Tutor Caroline Settle really made this apprenticeship interesting and worthwhile. I thoroughly enjoyed my 1-2-1 meetings with her as well as the group workshops she presented. Caroline was always available via email to answer any questions I had. I did not feel alone on this course as I have done with previous courses. Caroline is a very supportive tutor.
I learned an important skill by way of research and this course has been really interesting. Before doing the course, I would come to work and do my role whereas now I will investigate and research. Some of the modules in the course I had quite low-level knowledge but since doing the assignments and pre assignment tasks I feel more interested and knowledgeable.
If I continue to stay working within a school, I would like an Assistant School Business Manager role to enable me to learn the role more in-depth and to work closely with a School Business Manager (SBM) to give me the skills and confidence to become an SBM.’
