LMP Education is thrilled to announce the launch of a brand-new apprenticeship programme: the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant with HLTA qualification programme. This apprenticeship combines two of our most popular programmes the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship and embeds a Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) qualification within the course.
Specialist Teaching Assistant Programme
This Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Programme is the natural progression route for teaching assistants who look to further their career in education. Designed for those passionate about supporting children, this programme offers existing TAs the opportunity to specialise in a specific field.
Having a Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant on your team is a huge asset for any school. These are highly skilled professionals who go beyond general classroom support to provide targeted, strategic input—especially in areas like SEND, literacy, numeracy, behaviour and intervention work.
This programme offers the opportunity to specialise in a particular field of study such as Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), social and emotional wellbeing, or specific curriculum provisions like early reading or EAL (English as an Additional Language). It also includes the HLTA Level 4 qualification.
HLTA qualification
The programme includes 7 HTLA units, which equate to 36 credits (87 guided learning hours). Learners must be able to support individuals, small groups and a whole class without supervision. Assessed via written assignments, observation of practice, and evidence from work practice. Knowledge gained throughout will support meeting HLTA requirements which will all be submitted and assessed after Gateway.
Specialism pathways
This programme offers learners the opportunity to specialise in ONE of these areas of study including Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), social and emotional wellbeing, or specific curriculum provisions like early reading or EAL (English as an Additional Language).
SEND Specialist
SEND Specialist Teaching Assistants support the implementation of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) policies, processes, and procedures.
Social and Emotional Wellbeing Specialist
Social and Emotional Wellbeing Specialist Teaching Assistants support the implementation of policies and processes that promote emotional wellbeing. Learners will observe student behaviour to identify social and emotional needs and design targeted wellbeing interventions to advance learning.
Curriculum Provision Specialist
Curriculum Provision Specialist Teaching Assistants provide support in a specific curriculum area to advance learning. This may involve early reading or maths interventions, support for EAL learners, or subject specific expertise such as forest school provision.
Specialist Teaching Assistants work alongside qualified professionals, using research-based practices to plan, implement, and adapt learning activities that advance student progress. Learners on this programme can work in primary, secondary, or alternative education settings where specialist Teaching Assistants will make a real difference by fostering inclusion, promoting positive behaviours, and advocating for children’s needs.
