In today’s fast paced business landscape, it’s sometimes hard to stop and take stock of how we impact others as a business and as individuals. Volunteering is a fantastic way for businesses to support their local communities and make a positive impact for those around them.

Volunteering and British Values

Volunteering is linked to the British Values of Individual Liberty and Mutal Respect and Tolerance. By promoting volunteering in your business, you are encouraging these values within your employees and foster a more inclusive and ethical workplace benefitting employees, the business, and society.

Benefits of volunteering for businesses

Improved employee engagement and retention

A recent study has found that 60% of employees choose a place to work based on their beliefs and values. Volunteering gives individuals a sense of purpose and meaning, raising their motivation. By promoting volunteering opportunities and allowing your employees to take the time out of work to engage with such opportunities you will be helping to attract new talent, engage existing employees, and retain current employees.

Enhanced community relationships

Volunteering connects your business to the local community fostering connections, goodwill, and potentially new business opportunities.

Develop new skills

Volunteering allows individuals a chance to explore skills that they do not engage with in their day-to-day role. For example, Alternative Provision Manager at LMP Action Beverly Emmett provides payroll and HR services to her local community trust which differs greatly from her current role.

This development of skills allows you to have a team that is equipped with a range of unique soft and hard skills that can support your business’s running.

Social responsibility and reputation

Businesses who engage in social and community initiatives can foster a better reputation for their company that impacts both future employees and potential customers. As younger workers entre the workforce social commitment becomes a pillar of workplaces. Gen Z workers are more keen to work in purpose-driven jobs and 53% of Gen Z and Millennial workers expect companies to take a stance on social issues.
