Level 3 Early Years Educator apprentice Amy Chan used her apprenticeship at Oasis Academy Hobmoor to develop her career in childcare. Here is her story:

“With my children becoming more independent, I want to do something that I have a real passion for. I have always been enthusiastic in working with children, especially during their earlier years, partly influenced by my son’s nursery teacher, who was caring and warm-hearted when my son was struggling to settle in.

By doing the apprenticeship, it helped me to fast-track my time in gaining both hands-on experience and my diploma at the same time as I know I started my career late.

My tutors, Scarlett Horsley and Sally Thornton, have both been amazing and very supportive in helping me expand my knowledge, with their own impressive knowledge and experiences. All the staff in the setting have also been very encouraging; I always feel valued and respected. My line manager, Jake Timmins, also constantly gives me reassurance and support to help me grow.

The best part of my job is being able to work with children and see their happy faces every day, as well as making a difference in their lives by listening to and understanding their individual needs and struggles and acting upon them using the knowledge and skills I have learned over the past two years.

Throughout my apprenticeship, I have learned the significance of resilience and adaptability, which are very important to the role, as every child grows at their different pace and sometimes different strategies should be adapted.

I am thrilled to have secured a position at the school where I completed my apprenticeship. I am already gaining valuable insights through daily interactions with experienced staff and am planning to pursue additional courses to allow me to develop my skills even further.

My advice to anyone who is considering an apprenticeship would be that it is very important to choose something that you truly love doing, and it is never too late to achieve something good in your life.”

Well done Amy, best of luck in the future!
