LMP Education are proud to share stories of learners from across our programmes. Today we are spotlighting Melissa, a 24-year-old Library, Information and Archiving Services (LIAS) apprentice from St Wilfrid’s Academy. Here is her story:

“I chose an apprenticeship programme because I could earn whilst I was getting a qualification to do with the field that I am in as well as learning new skills.

I had previously tried university and it wasn’t for me, but with an apprenticeship, I found that I was a lot busier than what I was at university, but it was less demanding academically and I could focus on the job that I loved, as a lot of my day-to-day role counted as off the job hours.

Being able to get a qualification through essays at the same time as getting hands on experience within my field is definitely the main benefit to apprenticeships. During my time at learning with LMP I have been able to achieve a lot within my role as librarian as well as finish my apprenticeship.

I am proud of the events that I have run throughout my apprenticeship including Harry Potter Night and a successful bookfair that raised around £500. These were successful events because I used skills that I had learnt through my apprenticeship.

The best thing about my role is being able to spread a love of reading to children, whether that’s through recommending avid readers new books, or helping reluctant readers find something that they might enjoy. The relationships I have built with students over the past couple of years has been incredible, I’ve loved seeing them grow.

I have been very much supported throughout my apprenticeship by both my LMP tutor who has been absolutely brilliant, and my line manager who has done everything she possibly could to help, whether it be shift around my timetable to allow for meetings with my tutor as well as make sure I had the time to complete any work.

The most important librarian/archiving skill I have learnt is probably how to cater to the students, whether it be through events, displays or even the way that I talk to them. All of this is so important when it comes to getting them to read.

I hope to stay at St Wilfrid’s Academy and have the permanent role as librarian – I have very much loved my time at the school so far and believe that it is an ideal fit for me.”

Best of luck in the future, Melissa!
