A School Business Professional is an excellent qualification for those who currently work within a school setting as a School Business Manager or similar roles. This programme provides learners with key knowledge and skills to help them in their day-to-day role.

Tina is a 49-year-old School Business Professional apprentice from The William Henry Smith School & Sixth Form who decided to go on an apprenticeship journey to upskill within her current role. Here is her story:

“I decided to start this apprenticeship as I have worked in school offices for over 12 years and felt I perform the role of a school business manager but did not have the qualification.

The main benefit for me is this apprenticeship has worked alongside my current role, so I haven’t had to do extra work, but completing the apprenticeship makes you think about your everyday work and enables me to think smarter about my work.

I feel very lucky to have had an amazing LMP tutor in Kayleigh. I have previously worked in a mainstream school which I feel this apprenticeship is very much focused on how a mainstream school runs. My current position is in a special non-maintained school, and we have 3 entities across the foundation, this has meant I have had to interpret some of the tasks to fit in with my setting, Kayleigh has always been extremely supportive with this and helped and guided my work. I also have had complete support from my line manager, Lisa King, along with our finance manager and HR manager, whenever I have needed any help with the tasks, one of my colleagues has been able to help me.

The most important skill I’ve gained in this apprenticeship is confidence in my ability. I think this is very important, working through the modules in the apprenticeship has enhanced my knowledge on my day-to-day work. I feel I have a greater understanding and knowledge in particular of our finance and HR department, and our procurement process, as our processes are different to a mainstream school setting.

This apprenticeship led to new opportunities opening for me within my setting. I am currently school business support manager, I manage three areas of our school and I will continue to grow in this role and take responsibility for larger projects. I have already been given my next major project which is to replace our adventure playground, 2 classroom garden areas and a musical garden area.”

Well done, Tina, we wish you all the best in the future!
