Welcome to National Apprenticeship Week 2025! Throughout this week we will be sharing stories and celebrating the successes of our apprentices. Today we are spotlighting Ghost, a 22-year-old SEND Teaching Assistant Apprentice from Intuition Holistic Education. Here is their story:
“As a neurodiverse individual, my experience in mainstream education was challenging. The lack of adequate support not only affected my academic performance but also had emotional repercussions. However, these experiences have also shaped my understanding of the importance of tailored support for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). I am passionate about helping others who may feel overlooked or marginalised, just as I did during my own schooling. Education is a critical phase in shaping a person’s future, and I am eager to contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where students are seen, heard, and valued.
The most obvious benefit of an apprenticeship is the ability to earn while learning, but for me, the greatest value lies in the immersive experience it provides. By observing how my colleagues approach various challenges, I gain practical insights that I can immediately apply to my own development. The hands-on nature of the programme allows me to practice and refine my skills, while the feedback loop ensures that I can quickly learn from both successes and areas for improvement. Furthermore, the apprenticeship has helped me establish a routine that not only fosters professional growth but also contributes to a balanced and healthier lifestyle, both at work and in my personal life.
The most rewarding aspect of my role is the relationships I have built with both my colleagues and the students. The support I receive from my team is unparalleled, and I am constantly inspired by the progress and growth of the students I work with. Being part of their journey and witnessing their development is truly fulfilling, and it’s a privilege to be able to contribute to their learning experiences. The strong sense of community within the school has made my time here enjoyable and meaningful.
I am grateful for the extensive support provided by my placement and LMP tutors. My employer has ensured that I receive valuable opportunities to expand my skill set, from participating in training sessions to being involved in key events such as student trips and well-being initiatives. These experiences have broadened my understanding of the diverse environments in which I work, enhancing both my professional development and my confidence. On the academic side, my tutors at LMP have been outstanding, offering not just guidance on coursework but also emotional support. They have taken the time to understand my personal challenges and have provided consistent assistance to help me overcome obstacles, something I greatly appreciate compared to past support systems I’ve encountered.
The most important skill I’ve developed is effective communication. In a role that involves working with students with SEND, clear and compassionate communication is essential for understanding and addressing their individual needs. Whether it’s collaborating with colleagues to create lesson plans, discussing student progress, or advocating for the support required in specific situations, effective communication ensures that everyone is on the same page and that we’re all working toward the best outcomes for the students.
At this stage, I’m not entirely sure what the next step will be, but I trust that my journey will unfold naturally. I am committed to continuing to build on the skills I’ve gained through this apprenticeship and am open to the opportunities that will allow me to grow further in my career. Whether I move into a more specialised role or explore new avenues within education, I am confident that my experiences so far have equipped me to take on whatever challenges lie ahead.”
We wish you all the best in the future Ghost!
