Codie is a Level 3 Teaching Assistant from Oasis Academy New Oak in Bristol. She has been on programme since 2023 and enjoying supporting children at the school.
For National Apprenticeship Week Codie has shared her story with us:
“I choose to do an apprenticeship because it gave me the option to do my apprenticeship work online rather than having to spend time travelling to a college or place to study which was more efficient to me as well as offering work in the school in my area. This was helpful as travelling can be difficult for me sometimes.
Being able to gain on the job skills is a massive benefit to this apprenticeship programme. The way that your on-the-job skills link to your coursework flows nicely and has made me able to apply my own experience into my coursework.
Experiencing a range of skills and being exposed to multiple opportunities within the area is one of the biggest benefits of doing an apprenticeship. Acting as a role model and helping to change children’s future has really had an impact on me and made me grow an even bigger love for what this job role offers.
The tutors are great and really are there to support you they help you with any queries and are always available when needing support like through email or teams. My mentor was also amazing in supporting me and showing me how to do my job role in an effective way that would help me earn my qualification.
Being confident when working with new people is a skill that I have learnt through this experience which was a good attribute for me to gain as someone who’s struggles with being anxious and finding this hard. It is so important as you can feel comfortable to go to them for support and advice and asking questions. This made are team work well together as we felt we could trust each other.
In the future I would really like to take my current role even further and maybe even slightly change routes. My mentor (who was a class teacher) has really inspired me to take a big step and follow the idea of becoming a classroom teacher which is something I would like to do. I might use university to get a degree in teaching or see other ways in which I could earn a position to be a teacher.”
Best of luck with your apprenticeship Codie!
