Libraries are often seen as a place where people can take out books and study. At times they are disregarded as nothing more than this, however, school libraries and library assistants have far more importance to the development of children than just books.

In this article LMP Education is spotlighting how our Library, Information and Archiving Services (LIAS) apprentices utilised their programme to make an impact.

Supporting SEND pupils

LIAS Apprentice Maria works at the London Borough of Waltham Forest (LBWF) Central Library. During her time there she has made a huge impact adapting resources to support readers with different needs. Maria explains “The most important skill I have learnt is how to adapt library services to meet the needs of different user groups. This ensures that resources and services are accessible, inclusive, and genuinely useful to everyone in the community, regardless of their background or abilities. It has helped me think more critically about service design and how to make a positive impact for all users.”

Promoting literacy

Olga utilises her role as a LIAS apprentice to help develop the reading resources at her school. She is passionate about reading and encouraging students to read and explore diverse modern texts. Working with several community groups, she secured equipment and funding, which donated laptops to the library and has recently been given funding to introduce ePlatform where eBooks can be accessed in a variety of formats and languages to support SEND students and EAL students.
