Specialism pathways and HLTA requirements
HLTA REQUIREMENTS
This programme includes 7 HTLA units, which equate to 36 credits (87 guided learning hours). You must be able to support individuals, small groups and a whole class without supervision. Assessed via written assignments, observation of practice, and evidence from work practice. Knowledge gained throughout will support meeting HLTA requirements which will all be submitted and assessed after Gateway.
This programme offers you the opportunity to specialise in ONE of these areas of study including Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), social and emotional wellbeing, or specific curriculum provisions like early reading or EAL (English as an Additional Language). Benefit from gaining HLTA status as part of this programme.
SEND Specialist
SEND Specialist Teaching Assistants support the implementation of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) policies, processes, and procedures. The work advances learning for students with SEND, ensuring that tailored strategies are in place to meet these learners’ needs. You may collaborate with SENCOs and external agencies to provide specialised support.
Social and Emotional Wellbeing Specialist
Social and Emotional Wellbeing Specialist Teaching Assistants support the implementation of policies and processes that promote emotional wellbeing. You observe student behaviour to identify social and emotional needs and design targeted wellbeing interventions to advance learning. You may interact with external specialists, social services, and other agencies to ensure comprehensive support for learners.
Curriculum Provision Specialist
Curriculum Provision Specialist Teaching Assistants provide support in a specific curriculum area to advance learning. This may involve early reading or maths interventions,
support for EAL learners, or subject specific expertise such as forest school provision. You collaborate closely with teaching departments and may work alongside external education professionals to implement and adapt curriculum strategies.
