Physical Education (PE) teachers play a vital role in the physical and mental wellbeing of pupils in our schools. They help pupils develop life-skills and encourage a lifelong love of sports. In this article we break down reasons why sport is so crucial within the education sector and the benefits of sports training programmes.

The Importance of PE lessons

Exercising regularly is known to have many physical and mental benefits for children and adults alike. Here are some ways that PE plays a role in improving pupils’ experience in school:

Improved behaviour

The UK Education system is currently experiencing a behaviour crisis, with 76% of teachers reporting misbehaviour stopping or interrupting a lesson in 2023, an increase from 64% in 2022. Allowing pupils to have fun and release their energy in PE class can help to improve their focus and overall behaviour in the classroom.

Improved mental health

Exercising can be a tool to improve mental health. It supports self-esteem, helps to release stress, and causes a chemical change in the brain that positively affects mood. Through regular PE classes your school will have happier healthier pupils.

The importance of qualified PE Teachers

Like any teaching position, having the right level of qualification as a PE teacher is vital for ensuring that pupils get the best quality physical education as possible. PE qualifications include a deeper understanding of biology and physical health, alongside teaching techniques and how to support pupil wellbeing.
