The benefits of using apprenticeships to hire or upskills staff
Using apprenticeships to hire or upskill team members is a cost-effective way to ensure your team is fully trained and up to date with their qualifications. There are two key benefits to apprenticeship programmes:
The Apprenticeship Levy
Apprenticeships are funded using the apprenticeship levy. This is a UK tax on large employers which is used to fund apprenticeship training. It is payable by all employers with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million, at a rate of 0.5% of their total. The levy is paid into a central digital apprenticeship service (DAS) that employers can access. Funding is available for both new and existing employees and the training must be delivered by an approved training provider. Download Apprenticeship Levy Guide
National Insurance Contributions
From April 2025 employer national insurance contribution has increased from 13.8% to 15%. However, employers who employ apprentices do not need to pay national insurance for apprentices under the age of 25. This rule also applies to current employees who are placed on an apprenticeship programme.
