Evening hours can be a vulnerable time for young people. With fewer structured activities available after school, it is easy for boredom or a lack of positive options to lead to riskier environments or behaviour. For many families, the challenge is finding affordable and accessible ways to keep their children engaged, especially in the early evening when adult supervision might be limited due to work or other responsibilities.

This is where consistent, meaningful youth provision plays a vital role.

Evening youth activities give young people a safe place to go, trusted adults to speak to and opportunities to build skills, friendships and confidence. They create spaces where young people are seen, heard and encouraged to try new things. Research and local insight continue to show that programmes offered outside of school hours can reduce involvement in anti-social behaviour, improve mental wellbeing and help young people stay on track.

At LMP Action, we believe in the power of these programmes not just as prevention but as a platform for aspiration. That is why we have launched Action Academy Nights, a free weekly youth offer at Old Oak Community Centre for young people aged 11 to 16.

Action Academy Nights runs every Tuesday from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, giving young people a place to go when other options are limited. The programme combines music production and DJing, delivered in partnership with Noise Academy, with additional options including art, drama and sports.

Young people can work towards recognised Level 1 music qualifications and continue progressing as their skills grow. They are supported by professionals who have worked with high profile artists such as Stormzy and Doja Cat, and produced shows for BBC Radio 1Xtra. Most importantly, they are welcomed into a consistent, safe environment where they are encouraged to explore their interests and build new skills.

As a borough wide provider of youth services, we have seen first hand the impact of accessible evening activities. They are not just an add on to daytime provision. They are a core part of keeping young people safe, connected and inspired.
