This month we would like to congratulate Rachel Fuller a Teaching Assistant Apprentice from Deanwood Primary in Kent for winning Apprentice of The Month!
Rachel started her apprenticeship in September 2024 after her daughter started secondary school “I wanted something that was for me, something to get my teeth stuck into to help further my career with children in primary education” she explained.
Through her apprenticeship Rachel was able to benefit from the “learn as you earn” aspect of the programme that allowed her to be able to gain her qualification while still providing for her family and getting some hands-on experience.
Rachel has found fulfilment within her work in working with children as she said, “the children are the best thing about my role, the love and support you receive from them and the fact you can be having a bad day for whatever reason and they know how to put a smile on your face.”
Throughout her apprenticeship Rachel was supported by her LMP Tutor Naomi Chance as she said “Naomi Chance has been amazing, so supportive helping me to stretch my knowledge. She is always available for me to send emails to when I have questions about work, or the tasks set. She always has a smile on her face during our teams’ meetings. Her experience is vast, and she is able to pull on her knowledge to help support case study ideas.
Rachel has also been enjoying working in her apprenticeship placement saying “my setting is amazing also they are so helpful and always are willing to point me in the right direction, when I need to gather evidence or have a question to ask. I feel I have been able to slot into the team and they treat me with respect and value.”
In her apprenticeship programme Rachel was able to develop many skills that benefit her day-to-day work. When asked about the most important skills she’s learned Rachel responded “how to deal with older children’s challenging behaviours. Time management skills and organisation.”
Rachel’s achievements within the school have been recognised within her setting being shortlisted for the TA of The Year award within the Trust. Rachel’s tutor said “Rachel joined her TA apprenticeship with a wealth of experience in the Early Years Sector. She has settled into her role at Deanwood in the junior part of the school and quickly began to use her transferrable skills.
Rachel has spent time researching theories of development so that she could support the older children with their learning and apply methods to suit them best. She as worked closely with a child new to the school with EAL and has supported with transitions.”
Rachel’s Employer said “she is always punctual and volunteers for extra jobs. She is the first to offer help and is willing to support wherever she is needed. She is willing to admit when she doesn’t know something and will ask for help. She has expressed an interest in helping parents access support and get the best for their children. Rachel is a definite asset to Deanwood.”
Looking into the future Rachel is hoping to pursue a full-time career within education.
