LMP Education is proud to partner with Oasis Community Learning providing tailored apprenticeship training programmes to develop their staff. Since 2018, LMP has supported over 700 apprenticeships across the Oasis trust nationwide.
Oasis Academy Oldham identified a desire of their staff members Rubina to progress in their role and had decided to help her take on a Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Programme with LMP Education. Rubina shared her story with us:
“I chose this apprentice course because of my personal interest in working with children, future career goals and practical considerations. I enjoy working with children and this apprenticeship offers the perfect blend of hands-on experience with structured learning. I can also gain a recognised qualification whilst working within an educational setting and balancing my home responsibilities.
The main benefit of completing an apprenticeship is that you earn while you learn, gaining valuable classroom experience and a salary whilst acquiring a recognised qualification. Another benefit of an apprenticeship is that it provides structured training that helps with linking theory with real life experiences. The apprenticeship has equipped me with many transferable skills such as behaviour management and working collaboratively as a team.
My mentor at Oasis Academy Oldham has been exceptional in supporting me during my apprenticeship. She regularly attends all the progress review and is never too busy to provide any practical support in the classroom and guidance in collecting evidence for my apprenticeship assessment. Victoria Locke is a great mentor who provides constructive feedback to help me improve my performance and supports me emotionally, encouraging me to recognise my capabilities and achievements, which gives me the confidence to complete this apprenticeship successfully.
My LMP tutor Susan Radcliffe supports me during the teaching and learning session by explaining difficult topics by breaking them down and setting smaller tasks to build my understanding. She regularly links my learning to classroom situations which makes the assignments more relatable. Susan’s encouragement and motivation helps me to stay on track and motivates me to progress through challenging situations like meeting deadlines. I find her advice on gathering evidence extremely helpful in building my portfolio. Susan’s warmth and approachable nature has made my journey as an apprentice enjoyable.
I have made several positive impacts in my workplace, collaborating with the school team, external professionals, the pupils and their parents, to ensure a visually impaired pupil was able to transition from primary to secondary safely and with confidence. Working closely with the Visual impairment nurse has given me an opportunity to take on an additional role to adapt reading resources for visually impaired pupils. This promotes an inclusive environment, where students with needs can access the curriculum equally.
I regularly assist the deputy DSL during welfare meetings, where I support communication by translating in Bangla for parents whose first language is not English. My assistance ensures that parents can make informed decisions regarding their child’s welfare.
As this my second apprenticeship with LMP, I have been mentoring other colleagues who have started the level 3; offering guidance and supporting them through their course.
The most valuable skill I have learnt from this apprenticeship is being extremely organised and effectively manage time. This skill is essential for me to stay focused and on track during my learning journey, as I must balance work, meet deadlines and manage my own family commitments.
This apprenticeship will give me the foundational experience to progress into roles like HLTA or even teacher training in the future.
This is my second apprenticeship with LMP and my advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship is to seriously consider it. You will learn on the job, earn a salary, learn new skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification. It will also provide you with a pathway to a permanent job or further qualifications.”
Victoria Locke, SENCO and English Teacher at Oasis Academy Oldham said: “Rubina has worked so hard taking on additional duties supporting our visually impaired students from all years. She has gone above and beyond to make all students feel included within our school and she plays a vital role within our team.
One of our year 10 students struggles with visual impairments and Rubina has adapted all booklets so that when student is within school all booklets are readily available for them to access. Additionally, she spends specific time with the student catching them up with regards to any missed learning when the student is unfortunately not in school. She liaises with outside agencies and parents to ensure this student able to access the full curriculum. This student achieved a grade 5 in their last set of mocks, and this was down to Rubina. She should be super proud of herself.”
