Apprenticeships provide a flexible approach to studying, helping apprentices adapt their theoretical learning to their day-to-day work. One apprentice that has benefitted from this flexibility is Emily Mansfield, a Level 4 School Business Professional from Hull Collaborative Academy Trust. Here is her story:

“I was on a secondment from my substantive position in the MAT Central Team as a HR & Recruitment Advisor, to cover a period of maternity leave as an Office Manager in one of our Trust schools. I wanted to further develop my skills and knowledge to help enhance my career and so decided to do an apprenticeship.

I chose to do an apprenticeship programme, as I could learn whilst on the job. The main benefit of doing an apprenticeship programme is that you can incorporate your daily activities into the work you produce on your apprenticeship course.

I am proud that I have managed to complete the apprenticeship, even despite me returning to my substantive role as a HR Advisor within the Central Team halfway through the course. This could have been a barrier for me to complete the apprenticeship successfully, however, my Assessor and I worked together to leave topics that I would be covering in my HR role for when I returned.

I was lucky enough to have two different roles throughout the time it took me to do this course. The best thing about the Office Manager role was working with the children and helping my colleagues whenever necessary.

My LMP Tutor Kayleigh was absolutely amazing. She was extremely supportive and helped me whenever I needed it. She provided clear and concise instructions for tasks and made sure I was more than prepared for my End-Point Assessment. My employer supported me by allowing me to have the time to complete my assignments and EPA.

The most important skill I have learnt is effective communication. It is crucial because both of my roles involve/d working with a wide range of stakeholders – teachers, senior leaders, suppliers, and sometimes parents. Clear and professional communication ensures that information is shared accurately, decisions are understood, and collaboration runs smoothly. This skill helps prevent misunderstandings, builds trust, and supports a positive school environment, which is essential for pupil success.

My work has helped to improve operational efficiency and resource management, allowing staff to focus more on teaching and enhancing pupil outcomes.

After completing my programme, I wish to continue learning whilst working, and I am looking at doing another qualification (CIPD Level 5) to help me reach the career goal I have of becoming a HR Lead.”

Well done Emily and best of luck in the future!
