There are currently over 1.7 million pupils in England with Special Educational Needs (SEN), a number that has been rising steadily since 2016. With this rise, schools must ensure they have the adequate provisions in place to offer support.
Techniques to supporting SEN Pupils
SEN pupils learn differently than neurotypical pupils, as such, in order to help them succeed schools should introducing different techniques for learning within the classroom. These can include:
Break tasks down
Divide lessons into small, manageable steps with clear instructions.
Visuals & Structure
Use visual timetables, checklists, and clear routines to provide predictability.
Multisensory Learning
Engage sight, sound, touch, and movement (e.g., music, mind maps, hands-on activities).
Differentiated Materials
Adapt texts (length, vocabulary) and use technology (assistive tech, apps).
Thematic Learning
Use overarching themes to provide context and connect subjects.
Develop Specialists within your school
Having team members that are specifically trained to work with SEN pupils will ensure that they get the best support they can get. Apprenticeships are a great way to gain this level of training, as it is training that can be done while working full time. Additionally, apprenticeships are funded through the Apprenticeship Levy making them a cost-effective way for schools to deliver CPD to their staff.
Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship
The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship programme is available in a number of pathways, including one dedicated to SEN. SEN Specialist Teaching Assistants support the implementation of policies, processes, and procedures. Their work advances learning for students with SEN, ensuring that tailored strategies are in place to meet these learners’ needs. They may collaborate with SENCOs and external agencies to provide specialised support.

Case study: SEN Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprentice Thakdees Khan
Thakdees Khan is a Level 5 Specialist SEN Teaching Assistant Apprentice at Bare Tree’s primary school. When discussing the impact of Teaching Assistants in SEN education she has said: “teaching Assistants are vital in supporting SEN pupils because they provide targeted, individualised support that helps children engage with learning in ways that meet their specific needs. Teaching Assistants can adapt activities, reinforce understanding, and offer emotional reassurance, allowing pupils to build confidence and make progress at their own pace.”
