Amy Dolby is a 25-year-old Library Assistant apprentice from Derby, working at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. She has recently completed a level 3 Library, Information and Archive Services Assistant (LIAS) apprenticeship with distinction through LMP Education, which is an outstanding achievement.

Amy became a library assistant apprentice due to her strong interest in libraries, an interest that further developed through her apprenticeship. “I secured a role as a library assistant and decided I wanted to enhance my knowledge and skills as soon as possible. I wanted to carry out an apprenticeship as I liked the idea of studying whilst on the job, and liked the idea of being able to do an end project on something I was passionate about” Amy shared.

The role helped Amy have a sense of purpose being able to offer help and support to the doctors and students at the university hospitals. She said “I love feeling like I’m helping our doctors and students provide patient care and helping them work on their self-development whilst also being a place for wellbeing and a safe space.”

Amy has benefitted from the ability to study while she worked through her apprenticeship stating that having a one on one tutor allowed her to gain more skills and experience saying “my tutor, Kate, has been fantastic as she really made sure I understood everything as it was being taught to me and providing invaluable support whenever I needed it. My employers were also really supportive in giving me all the hours I needed and having spaces for me to go and use when I needed them.”

The apprenticeship has helped Amy to develop her communication skills, something that she has found invaluable “I have really developed my communication skills, particularly with my end point assessment. While this was nerve wracking, it really helped me to realise how to communicate with an assessor and present my knowledge. Knowing how to better communicate with our patrons too means that I can develop better relationships” she shared.

In the future, Amy is looking to continue on with her education saying, “I am hoping to go on and complete a master’s degree in libraries, which will allow me to further progress in our library and eventually become a librarian”.

We wish you the best of luck in the future, Amy!
