It’s National Apprenticeship Week! All throughout this week LMP Education will be sharing stories from our apprentices. Today we have Amanda, a 27-year-old SEND Teaching Assistant apprentice from St Thomas More Catholic Secondary School. Here is her story:
“I chose this apprenticeship programme because I wanted to challenge myself and give myself the chance to be able to do something amazing at my work, I really enjoy my job and I wanted to further improve myself.
The chance to go further with my career, but also having the guidance and organisation of the programme to help me achieve my goals.
The best thing about my role is working with the children, building friendships and trust with them and allowing them to be themselves when they work with me. I work a lot with the older children and a lot of them have said they feel comfortable and happy working with me.
My LMP tutor Kym has been fantastic working with me and guiding me through the programme, she had made sure that I understand everything that I need to do, as helped me when I was struggling with understanding certain questions and has reassured me when it came to speaking assessments that I was confident doing them.
The most important skill that I have learnt is self-confidence, I have had a lot of amazing support from everyone in the programme that I feel like I am able to go further in my career and get to where I want to be.
My next step in my career is to look more in depth into British Sign Language and Sign Supported English, I am really interested in learning sign language through another course as it is very visual, and I have found that signing helps a lot of children when they are struggling to communicate. “
Best of luck in the future Amanda!
