Teaching Assistants are key in supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs as they can provide a more personalised approach to their learning. Apprenticeships help new teaching assistants start a career in the education sector, supporting more pupils in the process. Louisa Atkinson is an LMP Education apprentice who is currently studying on a Level 3 Teaching Assistant SEND pathway programme, working at Oasis Shirley Park Primary. Here is her story:
“I chose this apprenticeship programme as I felt it was very fitting for me as a person, I looked at the reviews and researched the company and saw very good reviews. I am someone who likes hands on working which is why I feel this apprenticeship was a good choice for me.
I decided to do an apprenticeship as I felt that working in placement as well as doing coursework was my best option. Being able to gain experience and new skills whilst getting a qualification works best for me. I also chose an apprenticeship I knew that I would be getting quality training.
For me the main benefits of an apprenticeship are:

- On board experience
- Adaptable
- Lots of choices to choose from
- Getting paid whilst training
I am most proud for how I have improved in myself from the months I have been doing this apprenticeship. I have gained more confidence and been able to build positive relationships. This has helped me exceed in my role to support the children to my best ability.
The best thing about my role is being able to be there for the children and support them. Them being able improve and build their confidence motivates me to carry n with my job, knowing I can make a difference.
I think the most important skill I have learnt is recognising my mistakes. Before beginning my apprenticeship, I found that this was my most difficult trait, but now I have improved on that it has helped me in many ways. I am able to improve my teaching skills and reflect on what I can do to better support my pupils.
It is important for teaching assistants to support SEND pupils because they can find school hard to navigate or be very overwhelming. Having a 1 on 1 can help them feel supported and cared for to help them to work better. It can produce a positive environment for them to feel safe in and comfortable which can help them regulate their emotions better. It is better for them to have someone familiar to support them.
I feel that I am able to support children in their work and provide them help emotionally. This has had a positive impact on them as well as me, building their confidence and trust.
I have been supported massively by Kaye Newbury my tutor, she has supported me throughout my apprenticeship, and I have been able to rely on her if I have any issues. I have monthly calls and reviews with her to track my progress. I also was referred to a DSL to help me with my anxiety which provided me a lot of support. In my first call she spoke to me through my apprenticeship and what I will be provided with to support me. I am unsure of the names of the people.
After completing my apprenticeship, I would like to move on to either gaining another qualification or a full-time job as a teaching assistant as I work towards a teaching degree qualification.”
