In a recent LMP survey of Teaching Assistants (TAs), over 45% agreed that gaining a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) qualification would be beneficial for their future development and also their school.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) students possess unique learning requirements that may differ significantly from their peers. By introducing Teaching Assistants who specialise in supporting SEND students, we can address these individual needs more effectively, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
According to the Department for Education’s 2020 publication, ‘Special Educational Needs in England’ approximately 15% of all students (age 3-19) had Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Of these students with SEND about 22% had statements or educational health care plans (EHCP). This highlights the growing need for support in the sector and the requirement for qualified Teaching Assistants within schools.
In response to this LMP Education has introduced the new Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship with SEND pathway.
This new level 3 programme offers a structured route to a rewarding career in SEND. The programme combines practical experience and theoretical knowledge to increase skills to effectively support students with SEND. It is ideal for Teaching Assistants working in mainstream or specialist schools looking to increase knowledge and understanding around SEND.
This programme contributes towards the DfE’s recommendations that all schools have SEND responsibilities or specialism in their setting.
