January marks the start of the calendar year and also the start of a new school term. With pupils coming back from their winter break, now is the perfect time to reset classroom expectations to ensure everyone are on the same page. In this article we will provide some practical advice to support a learning environment.

Fresh start

Coming back from a long break is the perfect time to start fresh. Ensure that your pupils understand that this is their opportunity to start again, whether they struggled last term or not, you will be starting January as a clean slate. Now, collectively you have the chance to change what was not working previously. Discuss with your pupils what was and wasn’t working last term and find ways to improve them.

Reintroduce routines

After some time out of school, some routines may have been forgotten by your pupils. Work to reintroduce these routines from day 1, re-explaining them to your pupils and reinforcing their importance.

Be consistent

Returning to learning after a long break can be challenging for some pupils, which is why consistency is key. Make sure that the rules you have set up from the first day back stay consistent and clear, so pupils clearly understand what is expected from them.

Be vigilant

The festive season can be difficult for some as challenging family situations can cause distress to some, while others might have experienced something during the time you’ve spent apart. While it is always important to be aware and notice the signs of a pupil struggling, these first few weeks back are especially important as you will be seeing your pupils for the first time in many weeks.

Be aware of any unexpected behavioural changes in your pupils to ensure they receive the right support and the right time.

Early intervention

When it comes to supporting learners, early intervention is key. If you notice a pupil struggling or showing early signs of disengagement such as behavioural problems or attendance issues, be sure to take action.
