Ella, 17, is a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant at Thomas Bewick School. She has always wanted to work with children and enjoys supporting them on their journey and learning different ways to communicate with them.
Here is Ella’s apprenticeship story:
“I chose this apprenticeship (SEN Teaching Assistant) as I wanted to help and support children who need it. I also have a brother with SEN and seeing how much the teachers from his class supported him and helped him progress really inspired me.
The main benefits from choosing an apprenticeship is that you have the chance to learn whilst working, this means gaining more experience whilst also learning the basics and becoming qualified in the chosen apprenticeship.
The best thing about my role is getting to create relationships with the children I work with, as well as learning different ways to communicate with children who don’t communicate through speech.
I’ve been supported by my manager and tutor throughout my apprenticeship. I can ask for help at any time and have also been offered several additional training sessions to help me along.
I’ve been learning how to handle money, as well as how to deal with a full-time job, as I have never worked a full-time job before.
After this programme, I would like to progress into another apprenticeship to become a higher level SEN support assistant, and then in the future train to be a teacher.”
