Happy National Apprenticeship Week! Throughout this week LMP Education will be celebrating our learners from across all programmes by sharing their stories. Today we have Sarah, a 44-year-old Team Leader apprentice from Atlas Hotels. Here is her story:

“I chose this level 3 Team Leader apprenticeship programme because I love to learn, I am always looking for something to challenge me and I thought this was a good opportunity to learn and to put my many years of knowledge into a qualification.

Also, the fact that much of the work is based during work hours is good as you can learn whilst at work and helps you manage your time effectively.

The biggest benefit of doing an apprenticeship is obtaining a qualification whilst at work. There is a lot of support from the company the training and development team within Atlas. There is no cost to the employee therefore I appreciate that the hotel is investing in me.

The best thing about my role as a Team Leader is the variety of our work. One minute we may be checking in a guest, the next serving on the bar, making a sofa bed or responding to an email. No day is the same, guests are all different and can be a challenge for example weekend guests are completely different from mid-week businessmen. The most enjoyable thing about my role is the team the Hotel Manager. Everyone is so supportive of me doing the apprenticeship and they help me if I make them do tasks for me.

Atlas have been great at supporting me and my manager just lets me get on with the work when it doesn’t affect my day-to-day tasks.

The most important skill I’ve learned in my apprenticeship is time management purely based on the fact that you have to manage the apprenticeship workload alongside our day-to-day job. This can be challenging especially when you only work 4 shifts and have lots of extra tasks to do.

Also, some of the theory’s we have learnt have been useful as I can put them into practice with the team for example Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs.

I am very happy within my current position as it works well for me as a single parent, and I think it will be a useful qualification should I choose to take the next step.”

Best of luck in your journey Sarah!
