LMP Education is proud to provide excellent apprenticeship training across sectors. Today we are sharing the story of Nicola, a 54-year-old Team Leader apprentice working at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust:

“I chose this apprenticeship programme as I was interested in gaining a better understanding of the Team Leader/Supervisor role, as it represents the next logical step in my career development.

I wanted to do an apprenticeship programme over other career routes as the apprenticeship enabled me to schedule my studies alongside work commitments and provided a source of income, helping to alleviate the financial burden associated with traditional education pathways.

The main benefits of an apprenticeship programme are:

  • Earn while you learn – gain valuable industry recognised qualifications while earning a competitive salary
  • Skill development – practical training to acquire targeted competencies relevant to a particular career field
  • Career advancement opportunities – better job prospects and higher wages
  • Organised learning environment — a structured framework that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application
  • Networking and Mentorship – the opportunity to engage with experienced professionals in the field, acquire valuable insights, and receive mentorship to support career development

Apprenticeships are a valuable opportunity for individuals to acquire practical skills and financial support as they enter the workforce, while offering employers a dependable way to develop and sustain talent within their industries

I am most proud of managing and executing a project from inception to completion, using appropriate tools, and fostering effective collaboration within the team.

The best thing about my role is regular interaction with senior executives, enhancing my understanding of the organisation from both strategic and operational perspectives.

My employer provided support for this programme by facilitating regular time off for study leave and off-the-job training, as well as offering flexibility when needed. They also conducted regular meetings to discuss the progress of the apprenticeship, provide feedback, and address wellbeing concerns. My LMP Tutor offered valuable support and guidance during our regular meetings. We discussed requirements in detail, and I received constructive feedback. I found my tutor to be approachable, and I was comfortable reaching out to discuss any questions I had.

The most valuable skill I have developed is project management. Proficiency in project management facilitates effective coordination of tasks, centralised tracking of project information, timely status updates, and enhanced team collaboration. These skills encompass risk management, financial oversight, project initiation, organisational abilities, communication, and conflict resolution. Project managers are responsible for overseeing resources, monitoring progress, and balancing priorities. Once can expect them to oversee project planning, task management, resource allocation, time tracking, risk mitigation, reporting, analytics, and budget oversight.

My next career goal is to pursue a team leadership, supervisory, or business management position.”

Well done, Nicola, we wish you all the best in the future!
