LMP Education provides tailored funded training programmes across sectors, helping organisations develop Future Leaders. Such Future Leader is Sarah, a 45-year-old Team Leader apprentice from Atlas Hotels in Lichfield. Here is her story:
“I am always looking to improve my knowledge base and skill set. When the opportunity was offered to current team leaders, I was excited at the opportunity to join the apprenticeship programme.
For me the main benefits are the business side of the programme – areas that we would not normally look at whilst being operational e.g. governance, budgets, all the theories and how people learn and work etc.
My proudest moment will be when I finish a presentation. At first, I was not aware the course involved this so when I have completed this I will be happy – it’s been a long time since I had to present.
I love that every shift is different. You don’t know how busy you are going to be, you don’t know what may arise, one minute you could be checking someone in, then putting together a sofa bed then making someone a pizza! I also enjoy being part of team but equally I do like the extra responsibilities I have where I can work on my own to get things done.
I have been supported very well throughout the programme. My tutor Lorraine has been very supportive, we communicate a lot and if I have any questions, she is always there for me. My manager Rachel has been a great help regarding my work – providing me with extra information to help me complete my work. Also, Darren from Atlas Hotels has always been at the end of email for extra bits of information that I have needed for my work.
There are a few extra skills that I have picked up during this course. Probably the most important is learning that if things don’t come go to plan that it is ok. I am a very organised person and at the start of the course I was completing all my work on time, however due to the hotel being extremely busy and short staffed I haven’t always been able to meet the deadlines of the course. The other important skill I have learned is that when I am conducting a team meeting or delivering new tasks, I have to think about the level of the audience I am talking with and what styles of engagement they work best with. For example, some of the teams are visual learners, some of them like all the information and to take this away and teach themselves, so it is important to know your team.
At present I am very much enjoying my current role. As a single mum this position works well for me. Perhaps when my daughter is older, I will look at a Hotel Manager’s position but as for now I just enjoy learning and being a supportive team leader to those around me.”
Best of luck in the future, Sarah!
