LMP Education provides award-winning apprenticeship training to the education sector. One of our learners is Abdullah, a 23-year-old Teaching Assistant apprentice from Fullhurst Community college, here is his story:
“I chose to apply for this teaching assistant apprenticeship because I’m passionate about supporting children’s learning and helping them gain confidence. I enjoy working with people of all abilities and backgrounds, and I’m drawn to the idea of making a real difference in the classroom.
I decided to do an apprenticeship programme because I wanted to gain real, hands-on experience while continuing to learn in a structured way. For me, learning by doing is the most effective way to build skills and confidence, and an apprenticeship offers that balance between practical work and formal training.
The main benefits of an apprenticeship programme are the combination of earning, learning, and gaining experience at the same time. You’re not just studying in a classroom — you’re applying those skills in real situations, which helps the learning stick.
It also gives you industry-recognised qualifications and a clear understanding of how the workplace operates, so you’re building both technical and soft skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
Another big benefit is that it opens doors to career progression. By the time you finish, you already have work experience, a professional network, and the confidence to take on more responsibility — something that can give you an edge over someone who has only studied theory.
During my apprenticeship, I’m most proud of how I built strong, trusting relationships with students and became a go-to source of support for them. At the start, I was mainly focused on following instructions, but over time I developed the confidence to adapt learning activities to suit different abilities and needs. One particular moment I’m proud of was working with a pupil who struggled to understand multiplication and division. I planned and delivered regular one-to-one sessions, breaking the steps down and using practical examples to make the concepts clearer. Over time, she gained the confidence to work through problems on her own, and eventually she was able to get the answers right without any support. Seeing her succeed and knowing my guidance had helped her get there was incredibly rewarding.
The best thing about my role is being able to make a real difference to a child’s learning and confidence every day. I enjoy finding ways to explain things that make sense to them, watching the moment it “clicks,” and seeing their pride when they achieve something they thought they couldn’t do. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that the support I give helps them not only with their work but also with building skills and self-belief that will stay with them.
I’ve been really well supported throughout this programme by both Fullhurst Community College and my LMP Tutor, Amy Albut. At Fullhurst, the teachers and staff have been incredibly welcoming, always ready to share advice, give feedback, and let me take on responsibilities that have helped me grow in confidence. They’ve encouraged me to try different approaches in the classroom and have been there whenever I’ve needed guidance. Amy has also been a great source of support, regularly checking in on my progress, helping me set clear goals, and providing training and resources that have strengthened my skills. Having that support from both sides has made a big difference in my development as a teaching assistant.
The most important skill I’ve learnt is adapting my communication to suit different students’ needs and learning styles. Every child learns differently, so being able to explain things in multiple ways—whether through visual aids, practical examples, or step-by-step guidance—has been essential. This skill is important because it helps make learning accessible for everyone, builds students’ confidence, and ensures no one is left behind.
My next step is to go to university to complete a teaching degree so I can qualify as a teacher. I’m passionate about continuing to develop my skills and knowledge, and I know the degree will give me the deeper understanding I need to plan and deliver high-quality lessons. Alongside my studies, I plan to keep working as a Teaching Assistant. This will allow me to continue gaining hands-on experience in the classroom, apply what I’m learning at university, and keep building strong relationships with students.”
Best of luck in the future Abdullah!
