Through apprenticeships, learners gain more than technical knowledge; they develop the confidence and interpersonal skills needed to support others. Connor Meech, a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprentice at Summerdown School, has strengthened his ability to adapt and build meaningful connections with colleagues and students alike. Read his story below:
“I chose this programme because I wanted to make a difference in a school environment. Previously, I worked outside of education, but I wanted to have a positive impact on children’s learning and development.
I chose to do an apprenticeship because I wanted the opportunity to learn on the job while gaining a qualification and valuable experience at the same time.
The main benefit has been learning while working. Being able to gain hands-on experience is a huge advantage, and having the support of a tutor who provides excellent advice and guidance has also been invaluable.
Another highlight has been working alongside a fantastic team, including Lara, Shannon and Davinia. Seeing my confidence grow throughout the year has been an amazing experience.
I enjoy watching the children develop throughout the year, and even the smallest improvements make the job incredibly worthwhile.
My LMP tutor, Kimberley Regan, has been a pleasure to work with. Whatever issue or question I had, she was always there to support me. She worked incredibly hard to ensure I stayed on track with my apprenticeship, and I am very grateful for all the help and guidance she has given me throughout this programme.
The most important skill I have learned is adaptability. No matter how much you prepare or what plans you put in place, things do not always go as expected. Being able to think on your feet has been one of my strongest skills this year. I have also learned the importance of building strong relationships, not only with staff but with students as well.
I plan to continue working as a Teaching Assistant at the school where I am currently employed.
I believe my work has brought consistency, dedication and a strong work ethic to the school. I have built excellent relationships with both my class team and the students, which demonstrates the positive impact I have made.”
