Zac Holloway – Early Years Educator Apprentice at LEYF
National Apprenticeship Week 2023

Zac Holloway is 23 and is on an Early Years Educator Apprenticeship at London Early Years Foundation (LEYF) in Peckham. He chose this apprenticeship programme because he knew he wanted to help children and this pathway would allow him to combine his studies and gain practical experience. He did plenty of research and decided on his own career path as he didn’t want to work in his family’s business.

LEYF is a charitable social enterprise of 39 nurseries, employing over 800 staff across London. Zac was aware of how inspiring the CEO of Leyf was and joined LEYF in June 2021 as part of the ‘Men in Childcare’ initiative.

Here is Zac’s apprenticeship journey so far

‘Hi, I am Zac and I an Early Years Educator (EYE) Apprentice. I chose this apprenticeship programme because I knew I wanted to help people, in particular young children. I haven’t looked back since I started and this role has really been the making of me.

One of the main benefits of being an apprentice is that you get a balance of study and work which is really beneficial. I particularly enjoy the study days where I can reflect with colleagues and other apprentices. I have really immersed myself in the role and appreciate the job for what it is – caring, nurturing and being there for the children.

The best thing about my role is being able to support the children and use empathy towards others. I enjoy helping educate the children and teaching them new things. The job is so rewarding, and it has really helped my personal development such as organisation skills.

Through my apprenticeship I have had ongoing support from my mentors at LEYF and tutors at LMP Education. The next step in my career includes gaining more experience and understanding the dynamics of new nurseries.’
