At 34, Katie Lee embarked on a new career path that aligned with her passion for nurturing young minds. After having children, she discovered her true calling in education, which led her to pursue a Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship at Oasis Academy Broadoak in Ashton under Lyne, starting in May 2022.

Katie chose this apprenticeship programme because it allowed her to combine her newfound passion for helping children with practical, on-the-job training. She appreciated the flexibility of the apprenticeship model, which enabled her to earn while learning and balance her work with family responsibilities.

Working in reception, Katie found immense joy in witnessing children’s first learning experiences. “I love to see the children learning new things for the first time and watching their facial expressions when they learn or do something new. It is the best feeling,” she shared enthusiastically.

Throughout her apprenticeship, Katie received unwavering support from both her employer and LMP Education. She fondly referred to the staff at Oasis Academy Broadoak as her “little Broadoak family,” emphasising the nurturing environment they provided. Katie also expressed deep gratitude for her LMP tutors, Scarlet and Ria, who made the learning process smooth and boosted her confidence.

One of the most valuable skills Katie acquired during her apprenticeship was learning how to assess individual children and plan tailored strategies to help them progress. This skill has been crucial in her role, allowing her to contribute meaningfully to each child’s educational journey.

Looking ahead, Katie aspires to secure a part-time position in a school after completing her apprenticeship. This decision reflects her desire to balance her newfound career with spending quality time with her 18-month-old son before he starts nursery.

Katie’s story exemplifies how apprenticeships can open doors to fulfilling careers, especially for those looking to change paths or return to work after starting a family. Her experience highlights the personal growth, professional development, and work-life balance that apprenticeship programs can offer.

Best of luck in the future Katie from everyone at LMP Education. For more information on the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship
