An apprenticeship route is a fantastic alternative to higher education that allows you to work in a chosen field while getting a qualification, but how do apprenticeships work and what makes them so great? Learn more below.
What are apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are paid jobs where you learn while getting work experience.
Alongside on-the-job training, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning with a college, university or training provider which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
Benefits of apprenticeships
Apprenticeship programmes have a number of benefits that make them a great option for many learners.
Gain valuable work experience
The main barrier many people who are looking to break into a specific job field is work experience, many jobs require you to have some work experience within the field in order to obtain a job. Apprentices are able to work within their chosen field while getting a qualification which means that by the time they finish their apprenticeship they will have several months of work experience for their CV.
Learn as you earn
As apprentices work a full-time job throughout their studies they earn a wage. This gives apprenticeships an economic advantage over other learning options such as university or collage.
Qualifications
Apprenticeships offer a range of qualifications from Level 2, equivalent to GCSEs, to Level 7, equivalent to a bachelor’s or master’s degree. These qualifications are fully recognised and awarded by relevant professional bodies.
Progression
Many apprenticeship programmes have set pathways that allow learners to move up the qualification levels within an apprenticeship route. For example learners looking to get into finance can start on a Level 2 Accounts or Finance Assistant Apprenticeship continue onto a Level 3 Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship and finally complete their qualifications with a Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician Apprenticeship. This provides learners with a clear career path that can help them get into their chosen job.
Support
In an apprenticeship route learners have a wide network of support from their tutors to their managers at work and mentors, making it a great place to learn and grow into your chosen career path.
